On February 13th we were visited by Becky Petring and Auburn Harrison with Communities in Schools. This is an amazing program that goes into Title 1 schools in our community to help with drop out prevention. They have been in the Reno/Sparks area for the past 4 years and are currently running programs in 6 schools. The main focus is on helping students with what they have names the ABC’s: attendance, behaviors and course work.
In addition to helping students with their ABCs, Communities in Schools also runs food pantries and provides clothing and school supplies. This is a great organization working to help the youth in our community and we were lucky to have Auburn and Becky share their stories with us.

On February 20th, Vic Hopner with the Ronald McDonald House spoke to us about all the great they do for those visiting the Reno area with children needing serious medical care. The mission of the Ronald McDonald House is to keep families together and provide support during what is often the most difficult thing a family can go through. Not only does the Ronald McDonald House provide housing for families, but they also have a family room at the hospital where there are people to talk to and a space to unload. Additionally, our local Ronald McDonald House has a Travel for Treatment program where they assist families that need to travel outside of our area. It is great to know that we have such a great program available to those coming to Reno to utilize our medical care systems.

There are also some great things going on with the club to be aware of! Scott Maylath shared that the Manogue High School Interact Club is going strong and had a hugely successful coat drive.

Chesa invited all of us to join her on March 14th to see her dog be crown Mayor for the Day and to promote the Dogs of Rotary event.

Make sure to register for Rotary Means Business which is next week on the 13th!
