The Rotary Club of Reno Centennial Sunset is sponsoring an event, The Dogs of Rotary, to provide service dogs for Veterans. We are partnering with G.I. Dogs of the Humane Society to select dogs for qualified Veterans and the dogs and the Veterans will be trained together.
The Event will be held on September 30, 2017 and we will provide 25% of the net proceeds to the G.I. Dogs program. We like this approach because we will not only be helping a Veteran improve their lives, but we will be saving dogs as well.
Our Rotary Club provides funds and labor to many community projects in the Reno/Sparks area as well as internationally. Our local focus has been primarily youth services, senior support and help for veterans.
Dogs of Rotary will not only bring relief to disabled veterans but it will also save dogs that will be provided by the Human Society. We explored purchasing a service dog for a veteran, but the costs were prohibitive ($25,000 - $35,000). We, therefore, looked at the G.I.Dogs program sponsored by the Humane Society. We are hoping to provide dogs and training to at least three veterans (average cost is $3,500) by donating 25% of the net proceeds to the G.I.Dogs program. Therefore, the more money we can earn, the more veterans and dogs we can serve and save.
By involving people in the community who are recognizable and known or their service, we can expand the awareness of this first-annual event. Everyone loves our veterans and everyone loves dogs. This is the perfect combination for our motto: Service about Self.
