The RCS Rotary team competed in the inaugural Northern Nevada International Dragon Boat Festival on August 19, 2017, at the Sparks Marina, placing first in the Division C Mixed/Women/Open category.
Led by event chair Joe Musser, over 20 Rotarians, family and friends competed in three races over a 500m course set up in the marina. It was a beautiful day, and our intrepid rowers began by taking second in their first heat with a time of 2:41. Their overall placement in that heat got them into the semifinals. The RCS team had found their rowing rhythm and they scored a win that advanced them to the finals as the top seed.
The third and final race found drummer Chip Lindloff and front rower Claire Zybert calling out the beat as the RCS team slashed through the water and won the event with a time of 2:27, a full 14 seconds faster than their initial run.
Among the rowers were Rotary Youth Exchange students Cica from Brazil and Mateo from Argentina, both recently arrived for a year's exchange with the club.
Exhilarated team members flocked to the awards podium, where they were presented with gold medals and a trophy. Many thanks to club founder Jim Annis, who provided the entry fee. CLICK HERE FOR EVENT PHOTOS ON THE CLUB'S FACEBOOK PAGE.
